You can usually go back to ordinary activities after Botox, but save your workout for later. The American Academy of Dermatology advises waiting at least two hours before strenuous activity. To make planning easy, schedule a hard workout for the next day and follow the instructions given at your appointment.
What counts as a workout?
Walking to your car, working at a desk, and running errands are ordinary activities. A run, heavy lifting, a spin class, or hot yoga raises your heart rate and belongs in the strenuous category. If an appointment falls before your usual gym session, move the session to the next day. The American Academy of Dermatology gives a two-hour minimum for strenuous activity; individual injectors may give a longer window based on the treatment and your history.
Why wait at all?
The short pause is a precaution during the hours after injection. It also gives small injection-site bumps or tenderness time to settle. If you exercised sooner than planned, that alone does not tell you whether your result has changed. Leave the treated area alone, allow time for the result to develop, and contact your injector if you notice a concerning symptom.
What else matters that day?
- Keep pressure off the injection sites. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas. Apply makeup gently if you use it.
- Use your own aftercare instructions. The timing for exercise and other activities can vary. Keep the directions given after your appointment handy.
- Give results time. Botox does not smooth lines the moment you leave. Visible change usually develops over several days.

When should you seek help?
Mild redness, swelling, or a small bruise can follow an injection. Contact your treating clinician if a symptom worries you or gets worse. If you have trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing, seek urgent medical care. The FDA identifies these as warning signs that need immediate attention.

Most people can return to ordinary activities right away, including a normal walk. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas and follow the aftercare directions from your injector.
When can I do a hard workout after Botox?
The American Academy of Dermatology advises waiting at least two hours before strenuous activity. Planning a hard workout for the following day is a simple option; follow the instructions given at your appointment.
What if I worked out too soon?
A workout does not automatically mean your result is affected. Avoid rubbing the injection sites and contact your treating clinician if you develop a concerning symptom. Seek urgent care for trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing.
